CANES MAKE FIRST-EVER STOP IN VEGAS
5:00 a.m.
The Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights will square off for the first time in NHL history on Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena.
The first-ever meeting between the two teams marks the fifth game in a series of six straight on the road for the Canes, a trip that then wraps up in Buffalo on Friday.
The Hurricanes will be hoping luck is on their side when they visit Vegas, as the team is still looking for its first win on this six-game trip. A 3-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday left the Canes at 0-2-2 (two points) over the last week away from home.
"We've just got to work. Every game we have to keep working. If there was a key point that we could say is the reason why this is happening, we'd be trying to get on top of it and fix it right away," Justin Faulk said after Monday's game. "We're just trying to work. We have to work for 60 minutes every game, whether we're in a little bit of a slide or not. We've just got to bear down and fight. It might take a couple greasy goals or a greasy win to get us going and get us on the right track. We'll take it any way we can."
An encouraging sign for the Canes has been the recent play of Victor Rask. His goal - his third in as many games - brought the Canes within a goal late in the third period in Anaheim.
"He's been more involved in the game. Guys who are having success are in the heart and guts of the game," head coach Bill Peters said. "They're where you have to be. They're playing in the high-traffic areas. How far from the net was Victor when he scored? That's where you've got to go to score."
A stiff challenge awaits the Canes in Vegas. The expansion Golden Knights are one of the top teams in the Western Conference with a 19-9-1 record in their first 29 games and a staunch 11-2-0 mark at home. Following back-to-back wins in Nashville and Dallas, Vegas brings a four-game winning streak into Tuesday's match-up.
"I've heard good things about the atmosphere and arena," Peters said after Monday's game. "I look forward to getting the opportunity to bounce back and get two points tomorrow."
Hurricanes' lineup decisions will likely not be known until later in the day, but should the team use its goaltending depth as expected, Cam Ward will again try for win No. 300.
CANESPR NOTES: Both Trevor van Riemsdyk and Marcus Kruger were briefly members of the Vegas Golden Knights this summer. … The last time the Canes played an NHL expansion team was on March 7, 2001, a 2-1 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets in Raleigh. Hurricanes assistant coach Rod Brind'Amour scored both goals in that game.
