BCBSNC TOOLS TO VICTORY

Here are tonight's three Tools to Victory presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.
1. Build
The Hurricanes earned their first victory of the season in Calgary on Thursday night. Now the challenge is to build on that win and keep improving their team game.
2. The Killers
Going 15-for-16 (93.8 percent), Carolina's penalty kill has been excellent in the first week of the season. If that continues to hum along, the Canes will continue to be successful.
3. Back to Lack
Eddie Lack is the first to start consecutive games for the Hurricanes this season after he made 24 saves in Calgary on Thursday. Head coach Bill Peters said this morning that once someone gets going, he'll run him for a little bit. This is Lack's opportunity to do just that.

Head coach Bill Peters spoke with the media following the morning skate. Here are the highlights.
On the road trip thus far: "We're four games in, and we're .500. We've been on the road and done a good job. We've had some leads in some games and did a good job in Calgary getting the lead and then playing well in the third period. We're confident and healthy."
On building off Thursday night's win in Calgary: "Every game you have to take positives. I thought we were the better team for a longer period of time on Thursday night. We still haven't played 60 minutes. … We've had stretches and periods, but we haven't had 60 minutes. We're working towards that."
On the play of rookie winger Sebastian Aho: "He's been outstanding. He's a very smart player who can play all three forward positions. He's responsible defensively, and he knows how to play."
On perhaps juggling the lines a tad: "We'll see when the game starts. We knocked that around a little bit. We haven't had an opportunity to have a quality practice here in a while, just with the schedule. We want to make sure we're moving guys around so that when we do that in games, they're not shocked."
On goaltending: "You get a guy going, and you're going to run him a little bit."
I also spoke with winger Viktor Stalberg, who tallied his first goal as a Hurricane (which ended up being the game-winner) on Thursday night in Calgary and was commended with the team's new postgame award.
On getting the first win: "It's obviously huge, especially with how we lost the previous games, giving up three-goal leads. It's good for our confidence. We've got a young group. It doesn't matter sometimes if you outplay teams. You have to find ways to win. That's what good teams do. They have that swagger, that feeling that they're going to win games no matter what the score is. That's something you have to learn to acquire. It doesn't come overnight. We've got to work on it, keep making plays when we're up and being confident."
On building off that tonight: "It's just the confidence of winning games. You need to build that. It's a long season, and you need to build it every chance you get."
CANES LINES: MORNING SKATE

CANES AIM TO BUILD OFF WIN IN CALGARY

Just as one is better than none, two is better than one.
The Hurricanes scored their first victory of the season on Thursday night in Calgary by preserving a three-goal lead to beat the Flames 4-2. Now the Canes will look to build off that in Philadelphia in a Saturday night match-up with the Flyers.
"I thought we were better. Obviously we're going to get better as the season goes along," head coach Bill Peters said after Thursday's game in Calgary. "I was happy with the start and happy with the game overall."
Against Calgary, for the third time in the first four games of the season, the Hurricanes established a three-goal lead over their opponents. It was also the second time that advantage was a 3-0 score. The Flames would inch within a goal, but the Canes extended their lead to 4-2 late in the game on the power play.
"It's just part of the process of learning how to win and close out games. They got one late in the second, and you don't really want to give those up. Then they get one there to make it 3-2," said Jeff Skinner, who recorded a goal and an assist. "You just have to keep your composure and stay tough mentally. We had some big plays by guys in key moments, and we were able to keep our composure and get the job done. It's a good feeling."
The Canes got contributions from up and down their lineup, with Teuvo Teravainen, Victor Rask, Viktor Stalberg and Skinner all finding the back of the net. Additionally, Eddie Lack made 24 saves in Carolina's first win in Calgary since December of 2002.
"We stuck to it. No one panicked," Lack said. "We were poised on the bench and on the ice. Calm, cool and collected."
"I thought guys did a real good job staying poised," Peters said. "It comes with being familiar with each other and trusting each other. I thought we got real good contributions throughout the lineup."
Having earned points in three of their first four games of the season, the Hurricanes bring a 1-1-2 record into tonight's match. They face a Flyers club that, after topping the Kings 4-2 in the season opener, has gone winless in three games. The Flyers erased a 4-0 deficit in Chicago on Tuesday, only to fall 7-4. On Thursday night in Philadelphia's home opener, the Ducks edged the Flyers 3-2.
"I think we've got a lot of confidence," Teravainen said. "We can build on this and get some momentum going. It's always more fun to win."
CANESPR NOTES: Elias Lindholm recorded his 100th NHL point with an assist on Skinner's third-period, power-play goal on Thursday. … Rask has points in each of the first four games of the season and is tied for the team lead in points with five (3g, 2a).
